Site Information

Welcome to the University of Alberta Natural Science Collections search site.

The purpose of this site is to provide single-point access to the natural science collections at the University of Alberta. Together, they compose one of the most significant natural science collections in Canada containing millions of specimens from a variety of disciplines. As the data for each collection is housed in a separate database, this site was developed to allow searching across all collections at one time. The goal of this site is to allow researchers, students and enthusiasts in the natural sciences single-point access to these collections.

The University of Alberta Natural Science Collections search site currently includes the following collections:
  • Museum of Zoology, Amphibian and Reptile Collection
  • Museum of Zoology, Ichthyology Collection
  • Museum of Zoology, Mammalogy Collection
  • Museum of Zoology, Ornithology Collection
  • Freshwater Invertebrate Collection
  • E.H. Strickland Entomological Museum
  • Vascular Plant Herbarium
A Note on the Search Tools
This site provides two options for searching the natural science databases: the Guided Search and the Advanced Search. The "Guided Search" provides a variety of tools to assist in the creation of the search. The "Advanced Search" allows for a controlled, but more complex search. For more information on these searches, please see "Search Help".

A Note on Downloading Data Sets
Once a search has been successfully performed, users may download their search results in comma-delimited format (.csv). In order to complete the download, users must agree to the terms and conditions of the Data Use Agreement. Preview the Data Use Agreement.

A Note to Site Users
Although this site has been developed primarily for University of Alberta faculty, students and researchers, it is hoped that others interested in the study of the natural sciences will also find this site useful and informative. See "Links" to explore other pages related to these collections.

Technical Notes
The site is best viewed using Internet Explorer 5.0 and up or Netscape 6.0 and up, but should function on all browsers. The Department of Museums and Collections produced the site in collaboration with the Department of Biological Sciences. The collections data reside in MIMSY XG, an Oracle-based relational database management system.
